2. Describe the two types of shunt procedures used to treat hydrocephalus, distinguishing between them with respect to the site of drainage from the shunt.

3. List and briefly describe the methods available to detect a neural tube defect in a fetus.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans:

1.The possible harmful effects are a concussion occur the impact of severe blow to the head.it leads loss of functiona associate with concussion temporarily.

Braininjury may occur it can be lead to swelling, bruising, injury to nerves, tearing in the blood vessels, loss of consciousness, temporarily memmory loss, some it may lead to death.

2. Shunting procedure use in hydrocephalus

  • VP shunt( ventriculo peritoneal)
  • VA shunt( ventriculo atrial)

Ventriculo peritoneal shunt inserted in the fluid fill ventricle from brain and spinal cord to peritoneal cavity.it reduces the pressure on the brain by accumulation of fluid. It lowers the swelling of the brain.

Ventriculo atrial shunt strat same as a ventriculo peritoneal shunt ends in right atrium of the heart.used to drain the accumulation fluid in the brain.

3. Methods of detecting the neural tube defects

  • Amniocentesis-in this test they take some amniotic fluid in the womb to check neural tube defects.
  • Fetal ultrasound- assessing the fetus skull
  • Triple screening(MSAFP)- measur the alphafetoprotein,human chorionic gonadotropin,uncongugated estroil
  • Chorionic villus sample - for assessing the genetic disease
