Which of the following statements correctly describes telomerase?
Option A
Telomerase is the enzyme which is responsible for the addition of repetitive sequences at the tips of eukaryotic linear chromosome which is called as telomeres.
This is particularly important in eukaryotes because after every round of DNA replication, the length of linear chromosomes decreases. This is called as end replication problem and is solved by the presence of this enzyme.
This is a reverse transcriptase enzyme and adds DNA sequences in a process called as reverse transcription. This enzyme itself contains an RNA template which is responsible for the formation of DNA. Because DNA is formed from RNA, it is called as reverse transcription. Transcription the process of formation of RNA from DNA. Reverse transcription is seen in case of telomerase and retroviruses.
Second option is incorrect because the activation of telomerase enzyme is responsible for the extended lifespan of cancer cell.
