Determine if the following salts will be acidic, basic, or neutral. For each salt show the 1. balanced equation for ionization in H2O 2. how the ion products form which determine pH by producing OH- or H3O+ If the salt is neutral give a brief explanation.
A. NaF
B. CaBr2
C. NH4ClO4
D. KCN
E. KC3H2O2
A. NaF
NaF------------> Na^+ (aq) + F^-
F^- + H2O ----------> HF + OH^-
due to anionic hydrolysis NaF aqueous solution is basic nature. PH>7
B. CaBr2
CaBr2 (aq) -------------> Ca^2+ (aq) + 2Br^-(aq)
No cationic and anionic hydrolysis. CaBr2 solution is neutral solution.
C. NH4ClO4
NH4ClO4 -------------------> NH4^+ (aq) + ClO4^-
NH4^+ H2O --------------> NH3 + H3O^+
due to cationic hydrolysis NH4ClO4 is acidic nature . PH<7
D. KCN
KCN ---------------> K^+ (aq) + CN^-(aq)
CN^- (aq) + H2O -----------------> HCN + OH^-
due to anionic hydrolysis KCN is basic nature. PH>7
E. KC3H2O2
KC3H2O2 -----------------> K^+ (aq) + C3H2O2^-(aq)
C3H2O2^- + H2O--------------> HC3H2O2 + OH^-
due to anionic hydrolysis KC3H2O2 is basic nature. PH>7
