State whether 0.1 M solutions of each of the following salts are acidic, basic, or neutral. explain your reasoning for each by writing a balanced net ionic equation to describe the behavior of each non-neutral salt in water: NaCN, KNO3, NH4Cl, NaHCO3, and Na3PO4

Solutions

Expert Solution

NEUTRAL SALT : salt formed by the combination of a strong acid and stong base.

ACIDIC SALT: salt formed by strong cid and weak base

BASIC SALT: salt formed by wak acid and strong base.

1.NaCN + H2O NaOH + HCN ( this concludes that NaCN salt is formed by weak acid and strong base) so NaCN is a basic salt.

2. KNO3 + H2O KOH +HNO3 ( HNO3 = strong acid, KOH = strong base) therefore KNO3 is a neutral salt.

3.NH4CL +H2O NH4OH + HCl (NH4OH = weak base, HCl=strong acid) and NH4Cl is a acidic salt

.4.NaHCO3 + H2O NaOH +H2CO3 ( NaOH =strong base, H2CO3=weak base) therefore NaHCO3 is a basic salt,

5.Na3PO4 + H2O NaOH + H3PO4 ( H3PO4 = strong acid, NaOH= strong base) therefore Na3PO4 is a neutral salt.
