Expert Solution

I would expalin the basic steps required to design the footing. Without going into the calculations and exact expression these step will help you to understand the basic sequence that need to be followed for footings.

The Basic Steps of designing isolated footing are mentioned below.

1) Find the Base area requrired for unfacatored load combinations based on Soil bearing Capacity.

Area Required > Load/soil bearing capacity

2) Assume the depth such that the effective depth for bottom reinforcement is atleast 6inches(150mm) for first trail.

3) Calculate the bending moment & shear force at critical sections i.e at face of column for Bending moment & at distance d (effective depth of footing) for factored load combinations.

4) Design the flexural reinforcement for the moment obtained.

5) check the shear strength of fotting for provided reinforcement. If less than designed then increase the depth and repeat the process from step 2.

6) Check the footing for punching, If failed increase the depth of footing & repeat from step 2.

7) Detail the footing.

On the basis of extensive tests, the yield point of a particular type of mild steel-reinforcing bar is known to be normally distributed with σ = 100. The composition of the bar has been slightly modified, but the modification is not believed to have affected either the normality or the value of σ. Determine the required size (area, nominal diameter, and Bar No.) of the three reinforcing steel bars used in a 9 in. wide and 12 in. deep concrete beam to assure the beam fails in compression of the concrete and the steel reinforcement reaches its yield strength at the same load. Assume that the ultimate compressive strength of the concrete is 4,000 psi and the yield strength of the steel is 30,000 psi.

A reinforced concrete beam has square cross section (h × h). There are 9 steel reinforcing bars (each of diameter ds), 3 evenly spaced towards the top, 3 along the neutral axis, and 3 evenly spaced towards the bottom. The vertical distance from the centre of the bar to top (or bottom) edge of the section is called the cover, and is denoted as e. It should be taken that ρsteel = 7850 kg/m3, ρconcrete = 2350 kg/m3, Econcrete =...
