You are reading your textbook and studying for an upcoming exam in psychology. Identify and describe each step in the process required for remembering information from your textbook in order to do well on the exam. Discuss a strategy for improving memory and provide an example of how it could help you on the exam.
To help ensure the auto-feedback system will function properly, your response must contain a minimum of 100 words and a maximum of 1000 words, though individual prompts or your instructor may provide a more precise target range for word count. Your response will be automatically reviewed by the system, and you will receive your grade after your instructor reviews and returns the scores. Your response should not contain in-text parenthetical citations or other special headers or formatting.
Memory is the term given to structures and processes involved in the storage and retrieval of information. Memory is a crucial part of our existence as without memory, it would be impossible to function. There are three stages of memory- encoding, storage and retrieval. For remembering something properly, it is essential that attention is paid to all three stages.
There are three ways to encode information- visual, acoustic, and semantic. There are times when you can remember what a text looked like. This is visual encoding. At other times you remember the sound. This is especially true when you are remembering things for a short period of time. For major learning and long term learning, semantic encoding plays an important part. When you remember the meaning of something, you tend to remember it for longer.
When it comes to storage, information can be stored in Short term memory and Long term memory. Information can be stored in the short term memory for only a short period of time (0-30 seconds) but in the long term memory, information can be stored for a lifetime. When studying for a test, it becomes important that the information is successfully stored in the long term memory so that it can be retrieved during the test.
Retrieval is done through association. Organization information can help in retrieval. If you learn something alphabetically or in the order in which it occurs, it'll be easier to retrieve information. For example, mnemonics help. When you remember things in a specific order, it is easy to retrieve that information.
