Describe any information policy or ethical issues that arise from the existence of businesses customer profiling based on a variety of data sources, including social media and mobile phone data.
Customer profiling according to the business entities is to learn consumer behaviour and improve their service and products. It is also used to develop new products that would benefit the consumers. They collect the information stating that their information will be kept confidential although in reality, it's not true.
Most of the data is stolen by companies that exclusively operate for this purpose. They creep into the websites customers enter and collect their information. I used wonder when I get a call from some of the customer care executives who I do not remember giving my mobile number and consent. How did they find me?
There are also other issues such as identity theft, discrimination and unnecessary calls causing nusance. Identity theft is one common challenge both policy makers and the companies face. With every phase of technological advancement there arises a new challenge.
Some stores collect customers' details and mistreat them based in their race and culture. Some even went to an extend of accusing these customers with shoplifting.
People are constantly called for some credit card, bank account or some offers from X or Y company causing irritation and nusance while at work and home.
So the ethical considerations are multifold. Both the policymakers and the government should work together to ensure that they address the ethical issues concerning the consumer profiling and make shopping and trade safe.
