The following ethical issues arises when artificial insemination
is used -
- Increased risk of multiple gestation pregnancies and
superovulation which can lead to selective fetal reduction. This
situation compromises with the feelings of a women who is eager to
give birth to a child.
- It contradicts the natural way of reproduction. Additionally,
it does not cure the infertility of a women.
- Through this method, a single-women can also become the mother
of a child without involving a sexual partner which contradicts the
social norm of right to reproduction for which two people are
required. It also contradicts the social norm of a complete
family.
- There is also an ethical issue related to the identity of the
donor. (whether to reveal it or not)
- If it's a case of a single mother, then what will be said to
the child about the identity of his/her father?
- If same sperm is used for a number of artificial inseminations,
then all the new born will be half-brothers.
