Ans:
Genetically modified organisms are
created by introducing genetic material from a different organism
through genetic engineering and are used to design plants to make
them more tougher, nutritious and better in taste.Nowadays a lots of
fruits and vegetables are available in market that are genetically
modified.Although there are some benefits associated with these
GMOs,there are certain drawbacks too, that accounts for potential
effects on health and the environment. Some of them are:
- Allergic Reactions - Some of the GMO foods
have the tendency to trigger allergic reactions. This is due to the
presence of genes from an allergen, food that prompts allergic
reactions if consumed.
- Cancer promoting -Researchers believe that
consuming GMO food can cause cancer in the long run. This is because
cancer which is caused due to the mutations in DNA can be
aggravated by introducing new genes into the body in the form
GMOs.
- Antibacterial resistance -Although by
genetically modifying a crop's resistance to disease or tolerance
to herbicides can be increased,it could affect the ability of
people to fight against illness. The genes in the food can transfer
to the cell or the bacteria that thrives in the gut and make them
resistant to drugs, which could then pass on to humans.
- Out crossing - It refers to the risk of mixing
of genes from certain GMA plants with the conventional crops. There
are incidences where GMO corps that were approved as animal feed or
for industrial purpose are being used in food meant for human
consumption.
