  1. Arlan needs to choose between the two candidates that he had for a job as the new Manager in his new carwash branch. Jane is currently due for a promotion in her current company and is earning $42,000 yearly. She is willing to relocate, but does not tolerate working during weekends as she has 3 small children at home. She has a very good leadership and interpersonal skills. On the other hand, Betts who is very good in finance earns $40,000 yearly and is currently looking forward to a new challenge. She is single and is mobile most of the time. Both of them are receiving 2-weeks vacations per year and fully paid medical insurance. Arlan’s current pay for the vacant managerial position is between $38,000 to $48,000 with 1-week vacation for the first year. The company also provides medical insurance (with a 20% employee co-pay on the premium) to all the employees. If you were Arlan, decide on which candidate will you offer the job to. Recommend also whether Arlan should give a best-shot, market matching, or lowball offer to the preferred candidate? Justify your answers.

Expert Solution

After a thorough analysis of the above extract, I think I must go with Jane for the post of new Manager. Since when comparing both Jane and Betts profile where jane's salary is higher than that of Betts and moreover, regardless of the high salary, jane is getting a promotion that clearly shows the efficiency of Jane as an employee. And its also very clearly mentioned about Jane's good interpersonal and leadership skills which is a real characteristic feature needed to be a good manager after all.

Therefore I would go with Jane for the vacant managerial position.

Secondly, because of all these above-mentioned points, I am opting for the best shot(by providing her with a $48,000 salary package) and a market matching offer with Jane rather than opting a lowball offer as Jane is so talented in all ways and oneed not pressurize her with a low offer for no reason and moreover she is also a mother of 3 kids who has a lot of responsibilities to fulfill.

Hence the answer.
