What are some of the salient points about pancreatic hormone system?

What are some of the salient points about pancreatic hormone system?

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. Pancreatic hormones system releases hormones like insulin, glucagon, somatostatin, pancreatic polypeptide ( mainly in chicken ) and in less concentration in mammals.

2. The endocrine pancreatic tissue is organised into islets of Langerhans with cell subtypes such as α, β, δ, ε, and PP cells.

3. Alpha cells secrete glucagon, Beta cells secrete insulin, Delta cells secrete somatostatin and PP cells secrete pancreatic polypeptide.

4. Increased blood glucose level or the conditions which increase the blood glucose level such as increased ketone bodies, increased amino acid, increases fatty acids lead to synthesis of pancreatic hormones.

5. Hormones synthesized by endocrine pancreas are released into the bloodstream in which they reach to the target tissues in organs where processes like gluconeogenesis, glycogenesis, fatty acids breakdown etc. occur. These include muscle cells, liver cells etc.

6. Pancreatic hormones at these sites of action perform their biological functions influencing processes like glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, lipolysis, protein synthesis etc.

Pancreatic hormone system is the source of important hormones like insulin, glucagon etc. which have important role in processes like glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, lipolysis, protein synthesis etc.
