A performance appraisal, also called a performance review,
development consultation or staff evaluation, is one of the ways in
which employees' work is documented and evaluated. Performance
appraisals are part of career development and include regular
reviews of employees' work in the organization. The annual review
of the results has been criticized for giving too little feedback
to be useful, and some critics argue that review of results is
generally worse than good.
Performance appraisal is a systematic, periodic, process that
assesses each employee's performance and productivity in relation
to established criteria and organizational goals. Other aspects of
each employee are also considered, such as organizational behavior,
preparation, potential for future improvement, strengths and
weaknesses.
There are three methods for collecting PA data: production,
purpose, staffing and evaluation. Evaluation Evaluation is most
commonly used in different evaluation methods. Historically, PAs
are held annually. However, many companies switch to shorter cycles
and others switch to PA with shorter cycles. Interviews can include
functions such as "advising employees, advising and developing
employees, and sending and discussing compensation, employment
status or disciplinary decisions." PA is often included in
performance management systems. PA helps subordinates answer two
important questions: First, "How do you expect me?" Second, "How
can I meet your expectations?"
Performance management systems are used to "manage and align" all
organizational resources for maximum efficiency. “How the practice
is managed within an organization determines the success or failure
of an organization. Therefore, improving PA for all must be among
the highest priorities of modern organizations.
Some PA applications include compensation, performance
improvements, promotions, end validation, testing and more.
Although there are many potential benefits of PA, there are some
potential drawbacks. For example, PA can facilitate communication
between management and employees. However, PAs can lead to legal
problems if not implemented properly, as many employees tend to be
dissatisfied with the PA process. PAs that have been created and
identified as useful in the United States may not be transferable
between cultures and cultures.
