1.The RDA for protein is 0.8 grams/kg of body weight. What would be the recommended amount of protein for a 170 pound male who is 5 feet, 10 inches tall?  Remember: kg body wt= body wt in pounds / 2.2

55 grams

49 grams

62 grams

85 grams

2.Which of the following describes a process in protein synthesis?

The amino acid sequence to make a protein is copied from the DNA by messenger (mRNA).

Protein synthesized in the bloodstream

The function of transfer RNA (tRNA) is to assist in the absorption of amino acids in the diet

The ribosomes leave the nucleus and go into the cytosol of the cell

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. RDA for protein (given) = 0.8 gms/kg

Body weight of male (given) = 170 pounds

The recommended amount of protein required for that male (x) =?

First, we will convert pounds into kg (i.e weight of the man given) = Bodyweight in pounds/2.2

So, 170/2.2 = 77.27kg

Now, the recommended amount of protein that has to be consumed (x) = RDA for protein * body weight (in kg)

So, x = 0.8 * 77.27 = 61.82 grams of proteins = 62 grams of protein/day

The recommended amount of protein that has to be consumed per day is 62 grams

2. The correct option is A

Basically, protein synthesis means the amino acids are linearly arranged to form a protein. This occurs with the help of mRNA,rRNA, and tRNA. mRNA which is a single polynucleotide strand carries the genetic code from DNA to ribosomes.

Large complexes of protein and RNA combine to make up ribosomes. Ribosomes are mainly involved in protein synthesis. mRNA travels to the ribosomes which then translate the code into amino acids of a protein. This code is given by the sequence of nitrogenous bases present in mRNA. mRNA is translated into the proper sequence of amino acids in ribosomes.

mRNA leaves the nucleus in search of ribosomes, ribosomes doesn't leaves the nucleus.

So, the correct option is a. The amino acid is copied from DNA by mRNA to make up the protein. This best describes the process of protein synthesis. This is the first step of protein synthesis.
