Calculate the protein needs for the following individuals.  Use the recommended values for protein intake.

1. Kevin, 173 pound regular exerciser. Trains 3 hours/week in weight room and walks 2 hours per week on the treadmill. Calculate his protein requirement in grams per day.

2. If Kevin decided to become a vegetarian, how much would his protein needs be?

3. Carla is a sedentary office worker who weighs 122 pounds. Calculate her estimated protein requirements in grams per day. She is currently eating about 50 grams per day. Is her intake adequate?

4. Manny weighs 205 pounds and weight trains 6 days per week. He consumes about 200 grams of protein per day to help him gain muscle. How many grams of protein per kg is he eating? Is his intake considered excessive?

I already know the answer of number 1 question, so please answer number 2,3,4.

Solutions

Expert Solution

2. Even if Kevin changes to a vegeterian diet, the protein requirements per day will be same , as Kevin workouts is strenous, so if he lower the protein intake per day , he will lose muscle mass.

however, the sources of protein will be changed , Will exclude meat, but will be full of pulses and cereals. He might be suggested to use protein shakes to overcome the protein deficient due to change in the diet.

3.According ro the U.S. Department and Agriculture suggests a minimum of 0.8 grams of proteins per kilogram of body weight per day.

Carla is 122 pounds, which is approximately 55 kg, That means she will require 55 x 0.8 = 44g of proteins per day.

She is taking 50 g of proteins per day , which is more than enough. But she should start some exercise to process the excess of the proteins.

4.For weight trainers and athletes , the recommended protein intake is 2.2g/kg/day.

Manny weighs 205 pounds which is equal to 92 kg , so the protein requirements is 92 x 2.2 = 202 g .

He is consuming 200g of proteins , which is almost equal to the required protein . But he should increase intake a little bit.
