Explain this, "Global media tend to homogenize culture."
There is an interconnection between globalization and media. The
growth of globalization leads to an acceleration of a large extent
with the growth and development of media technology mainly in areas
of TV, films, internet, video, music, news, etc. Media performs as
an agent of globalization in creating homogenization by expending
cultural symbols, ideas, practices across the socio-cultural
setting of the world. Media has an instant effect as it moves
faster than any material goods or people. It results in a huge
impact on sustaining and weakening the fabric of social life. Media
will be more effective in stabilizing or destabilizing existing
social, political, religious scenarios when communication of media
is efficient. It helps in the construction of the identity of
people across the dimensions of the nation, race, class, gender,
ethnicity, etc in various ways which result in the process
of homogenization.
The globalization process is characterized by relations that are
moderating by the symbols of values, preference, taste, etc through
the powerful effect of media. Media globalization has numerous
effects as it might result in the hybridization of cultures, the
contention of cultural autonomy and identity, cultural conflict,
localization and homogenization.
