Problem 2 How much ice is in the final state after 2 kg of ice at -30°C is added to a large quantity of water at 0°C? The final state is ice-water. (10 points)
Heat gained by ice to reach a state of ice at 0 degree Celsius = m×c×∆T
= 2×2090×30
= 125400 joule
Now more heat required to convert this ice at 0 degree Celsius to water at 0 degree Celsius =
m Lf = 2×334000 = 668000 Joules
Therefore total heat absorbed = 125400+668000=793400 joules
Now this amount of heat will be released by large quantity of water initially at 0 degree Celsius
Therefore, on loosing this amount of energy, some of water will be converted into ice
793400 = m1 × 334000
m1= 2.37 kg
Therefore in the final mixture there will be 2.37 kg of ice and rest water .
Hence a final mixture will have a state of ice-water.
