Name two differences between an XPS X-Ray source and an XRD X-Ray source. Explain why they are different.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer: XPS X-ray source means x-rar photoelectron spectroscopy. It is also known as electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis.XPS techinque used dectect the all elements with atomic number Z =3 and above. This technique measures the elemental composition at the parts per million.

Each element produce a characteristic set of XPS-peaks at characteristic binding energy values. The number of detected electrons in each of the characteristic peaks is directly related to the amount of element within the XPS sampling volume.

XRD means x-ray diffraction.A primary use of the technique is the identification and characterization of compounds based on the diffraction. It is most important non-destructive tools to analyze all kinds of matter.

XRD is an indispensable method for materials characterization and quality control. In this XRD by using Braggs law to estimate crystal analysis.

a. Explain why filtering of an X-ray beam causes a simultaneous decrease in beam quantity and increase in quality [a diagram may be useful] b. The two main mechanisms by which X-rays interact with matter are via Compton scattering and absorption by the photoelectric effect.
