Psychoanalysis as Freud defined it and also as the neo-Freudians of Jung, Horney, Adler and Erickson defined it have had a large impact on American society. What are some of the example you see in movies, vocabulary, media and everyday life?
To summarize and compare all the major theories :
Theories | Key Proponents | View |
Psychoanalysis | Freud | Personality consists of id [Pleasure principles], Ego [Reality & rational principles like waiting for feed, temper] & Superego [Learning right or wrong] |
Psychodynamics | Alder, Horney, Jung | Conscious & unconscious motives shape our personality |
Humanistic | Roger, Maslow | If basic human needs are met people will strive for self-actualization |
Trait | Allport, Eysenck, costa |
There are many events or situations have witnessed which state an example of above theories. Like
1. One of my friend mothers left him and the family when she was a child, ever since then he has had a very difficult time trusting people because he is afraid that they will abandon him.
2. My Husband lost his car keys and was late for work. A psychoanalytic theorist might say that he lost his keys because, somewhere in his subconscious, he did not want to go to work that day and actually wanted to quit his job.
3. Movie: Black swan [ where a mother who never managed herself to become a prima ballerina resulted in the horrifying result, making a daughter a star. The main character constantly waits for others appraisal and recognition.
