Public Speaking…Dealing with It

Often when a person thinks of public speaking the thoughts a person may have will vary from the next, because while one person may have experience the other person may not. Being able to communicate effectively requires that a person acknowledges the frame of reference of the other person to avoid miscommunication. As a person that has had many projects that required me to speak in front of others, I never really put much thought as to why I was nervous, to really be able to work on the problem. So today I will be explaining how knowing the fundamentals of public speaking can help to prepare for a speech ,how to research for content that can be applied to the visual aid that maybe prepared to enhance performance and lastly how to achieve the best speech delivery possible,as the aid itself will communicate the purpose through nonverbal communication.

First and foremost when writing a speech, it is important to be audience centered, considering who the audience is will help to choose an appropriate topic. After choosing a topic, the research begins, having research makes a person credible to their audience. The topic that is chosen should always follow a theme, by having a theme the audience may be more drawn in, to listen to what is being said. The base of every speech has its purpose whether it be a persuasive speech or an informative speech, having organization throughout the speech can help create a flow of events as opposed to having ideas scattered throughout the speech. As a speaker, the goal is to be able to connect to the audience. The language used within the speech can help the message be easier for the audience to understand.

Secondly, when doing research to find sources, the purpose of the overall speech is always the main focus. More research means more supporting material, whether it be a article, a video, or data from a poll this information can be used to persuade the audience of that cause that the speaker wants the audience to support. Likewise when informing the audience its best to find interesting facts, no matter how common a topic maybe there is always something new that can be learned.

Lastly when presenting the speech its important to be aware of the volume as the audience needs to be able to hear even in the back of the room, if the audience can hear in the back they’ll be able to engage in the conversation depending on the conversational style, and through the use of paralanguage with a change in tone, the meaning of the message can be changed. The projection of the speakers voice can be used to grab the attention of the audience from beginning to end. One of the many ways to present is through extemporaneous speaking. But also taking control of the communication anxiety can help to build up confidence in what an individual might be saying to the audience. Gestures maybe used at some point maybe to demonstrate something throughout the presentation. Being able to hold eye contact and having a loud voice makes it easier to be heard if the message has a lot of time and thought into building being able to speak to an audience about it will feel like imparting knowledge to the audience.

In conclusion, ”think twice before you speak because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another.” Speaking to others always leaves an impact of some kind. From job interviews to speaking with other peers, leaving an good impression is what helps people remember the message that was spoken as well as the person that spoke, the one common thing about all great speeeches they made an impact somehow, and speaking in public can leave an impact on the audience if the message is the right one towards that specific audience.

Public Speaking…Dealing with It

Often when a person thinks of public speaking, their thoughts are likely to will vary from the next, owing to differences in their past experience of the field. A critical aspect of being able to communicate effectively requires that a person acknowledges the frame of reference of the other person, in order to avoid miscommunication. As a person that has had many projects that required me to speak in front of others, I never really put much thought as to why I was nervous, to really be able to work on the problem. So today, I will be highlighting three means by which one’s public speaking skills can be enhanced. Firstly, I will explain how a thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of public speaking can help one to prepare for a speech. Next, I will discuss how to research for content and apply visual aids to enhance performance and lastly, how to achieve the best speech delivery possible, with the aid itself conveying the purpose of the speech through nonverbal communication.

First and foremost, when writing a speech, it is important to be audience-centered, as considering who the audience is will help to choose an appropriate topic. After the topic is chosen, one should begin the process of research as citing research studies makes a person appear credible to their audience. The topic that is chosen should always fall under a theme, as it makes the audience more likely to be drawn in and listen to what is being said. The base of every speech should be established by specifying its purpose, that is, whether the intention of the speech is to be persuasive or informative. Also, it is important to ensure that the structure of the speech is organized to create a logical and meaningful flow of events, as opposed to having ideas scattered in an erratic fashion. As a speaker, the goal is to be able to connect to one’s audience, for which the language used in one’s speech determines if it can be understood and comprehended by the others.

Secondly, when researching to find appropriate sources and content, the overall purpose of the speech should always assume the main focus. More research means a more supporting material, and whether it be an article, a video, or data from a poll, this information can be used to persuade the audience of the cause that the speaker endorses and seeks support. Likewise, when communicating information to the audience, it is best to find interesting facts. No matter how common a topic maybe, there is always something new that can be presented.

***please add some content on visual aids here, as you have mentioned this point in your introductory paragraph.

Lastly, speech delivery involves several aspects that require consideration. When presenting the speech, it is important to be aware of the volume to ensure that the audience is able to hear it, even if they are seated in the back of the room. Being able to hear the speech despite being in the back will allow the audience to engage in a conversation allowing the speaker to adopt a conversational style. Furthermore, the use of paralanguage with a change in tone, lets the speaker change the meaning of the message. The projection of the speaker's voice can be used to grab the attention of the audience from the beginning to the end. Being able to maintain eye contact and using a loud voice makes it easier for the speaker to be heard. Gestures may be used at some point to demonstrate and emphasize on certain points during the presentation. Another way to present is through extemporaneous speaking. Addressing any communication anxiety that the speaker experiences beforehand can help building up confidence in general.

In conclusion, I would like to assert, ”think twice before you speak because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another.” Speaking to others always leaves an impact of some kind or the other. From job interviews to speaking with other peers, leaving a good impression is what helps people remember the message that was spoken as well as the person who communicated it., The one common thing about all great speeches is that they made an impact somehow, and speaking in public can leave an impact on a large audience if the message is the right one for that specific audience.
