Under which of the following conditions with the Southdale to undergo apoptosis?

a) the disc (death inducing signaling complex) is assembled with initiator capases
b) BH3 only proteins are inactivated
c) apaf1 proteins form the apoptosome
d) anti IAP are activated

Solutions

Expert Solution

A - DISC (death-inducing signalling complex) is assembled when the death ligand bind to the receptor. DISC binds with the initiator caspases and activates it. So, option A is correct.

B- BH3 only protien, when activated binds to the anti-apoptotic proteins and inactivate them. Thus it helps in the apoptosis. If  BH3 only proteins are inactivated then the cell will not undergo apoptosis. So option B is wrong.

C- Apoptotic protease activating factor 1 or APAF1 along with cytochrome C and caspase 3 makes apoptosome, that activates caspases 3. Thus it helps in apoptosis. So option C is also correct.

D-  IAP to the inhibitor of apoptosis protein, inhibits the apoptosis. Anti IAP proteins bind to IAP and lead to cell for apoptosis. If anti-IAP proteins are activated then it will bind to IAP and leads the cell for apoptosis. So option D is also correct.

So, under A, C and D condition Southdale will undergo apoptosis.

Cells are the basic units of life. They undergo a natural life and death cycle called mitosis and apoptosis. Under normal circumstances, normal cells grow, divide and rest. But cancerous cells do not rest after they grow and divide - they continuously replicate. However, proliferation of cells do NOT always result in cancer, but instead form benign tumors. In your own words, explain the difference between benign and malignant cells. Include the word "metastasis" in your explanation.
