Identify one practice that has changed in nursing. Then discuss how the evidence (nursing or medical research) supported this change and its impact on patient health outcomes or nurse health outcomes. Example practices include: compression-breath ratio change in CPR (from 15:2 to 30:2), saline lock instead of heparin lock for intravenous catheters, reduction in restraints (chemical and physical) to prevent falls in older adults.
Lately, many of the factors have changed in nursing, contributing majorly to a more revolutionised treatment for the patients. One of the major changes are Evidence Based Practices (EBP). For EBP, care systems have been set up so as to there is a proper balance between evidence based patient care and nerve satisfaction . The foundation for the disease management work carried out by nurse practitioners, also has EBP as its foundation. Following this there are several other practice changes that have been brought about in nursing which are as follows :
- Increase in the nursing work force with increased employment for the more experienced nurses.
- imparting knowledge for more developing areas of treatment such as gene therapy and stem cells.
- a much greater emphasis on quality of patient care and safety
- introduction and implementation of better , more advanced techniques that would be more beneficial to the patient and would aid in better And faster recovery , examples of such advances are compression-breath ratio change in CPR (from 15:2 to 30:2), saline lock instead of heparin lock for intravenous catheters
Earlier the 15:2 compression to ventilation (C:V) ratio was recommended which resulted in frequent interruptions during CPR. Thus, a new protocol with C:V ratio of 15:2-30:2 was studied and evaluated to reduce interruptions in compression.
