Imagine that you are departing on a 10-year voyage, leaving behind your pre-adolescent child. Your task is to compose a letter to help your imaginary child cope with the changes – biological due to puberty, cognitive, and social -- that will soon occur and associated with these changes issues of identity, autonomy, and sexuality.
Dear Sarah,
It's unfortunate that I have to leave you like this, at such an important time of your life. By the time I return you will be a lady, and I will have missed watch you become one. I want you to know and be prepared of all the changes that are to come your way, both mentally as well as physically. You are going to turn into a woman, and your body is going to be able to bear children. Your mind will also have grown and you will now be capable of more mature thinking, and reasoning. You're going to make friends and boyfriends and soon they will become the most important thing in your life. But I want you to be aware of all these changes, and know that though at times you might feel frustrated and alone, you will always have people around you who will love and protect you. You will be given the freedom to make your choices and choose your own path, but be aware or all the good and the bad consequences of every decision you make and be wise. Do not take the freedom that you will be given for granted. You might face confusion and lack of identity, but that too will pass as you slowly find your way around life. Most importantly, be healthy and be happy, and surround yourself with people you enjoy spending time with and love.
