Discuss 2 types of anxiety disorders and list possible treatments. Discuss the role cognitions (our thoughts) may play in our experiences of anxiety and depression.
2 types of anxiety disorders
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) - It has got two things,
obsessions and compulsions. When a person becomes obsessed with a
thing, they would crave for it until they get it. The second level
talks about the behaviour of doing something to satisfy that
craving. It can be treated with therapies, medications and
counseling.
Therapies such as support group where similar goal oriented people
assemble, individual sessions where the counselor have a one on one
session to help them understand the facts and help with ways of
coming out of OCD. This could also be treated with aversion therapy
that helps the client to move away from the obsessive behaviour by
associating negative emotions or event s with that.
Medications such as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI)
that eases symptoms of depressed mood and anxiety. Anxiolytic that
relieves anxiety and tension and it would also promote sleep.
Finally, antidepressant that prevents depression and help soothing
the mood.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) - This disorder occurs after
a stressful or shocking event. It could be physical such as
accidents or emotional such as a loved one's feath Reliving. It
increases when people think of it, responding to triggers that are
similar to the event, when the person believe that the event may
occur again and when they go into emotional trrouble.
This could be treated by proper counseling and therapies such as,
cognitive behavioral therapy which is a talk therapy through which
the nagative thoughts are taken out, eye movement desensitization
and reprocessing which helps in reducing the stress through eye
movements and exposure and response prevention which is a talk
therapy that exposes the patient in a safe condition to the
traumatic events.
Cognition our brain's ability to process information and events is
tremendous. If it can experience anxiety and depression and throws
you down, it can also bounce back. So most of the theories suggest
cognitive therapy where they train the brain to accept the
stressful events and renew the memory with fresh ideas to move
forward.
