3. Determine whether the given value is a statistic or a parameter.
a. In a study, 21% respondents said they
did not vote.
b. 20% of homeowner cannot pay their
mortgage.
c. 30% of all dog owners poop scoop after
their dogs.
d. 80% of students who showed up on the first
day of class last semester passed the class
with flying color.
4. Determine whether the given values are from a discrete or continuous data.
a. Temperatures of the ocean at various
depths.
b. The voltage supplied each day to my home
in August 2018.
c. The amount of water I drank yesterday. d. The number of books I read this summer.
e. People are asked to state how many times
in the last month they visited their family
doctor.
f. The time it takes a computer to finish a
task.
3. Determine whether the given value is a statistic or a parameter.
A statistic is a value calculated using a sample which is a part of a large population. Where as a paramter is a value calculated using the large population.
a. In a study, 21% respondents said they
did not vote.
statistic
Because it is a study and in a study samples are used.
b. 20% of homeowner cannot pay their
mortgage.
Parameter
This is in general value which means for the enitre population
c. 30% of all dog owners poop scoop after
their dogs.
Parameter
Again says all dog owners means population
d. 80% of students who showed up on the first
day of class last semester passed the class
with flying color.
Statistic
Small group of students out of which only first day attenders so a sample of students.
4. Determine whether the given values are from a discrete or continuous data.
When the data is in numerical form it can be discrete or continuous. When a data is measure and the values that it can take are finite or have finite space between two values it is discrete. Eg: number of houses owned, numbers of kids, days in a month etc. On the hand if a data can take inifinite values between two values, they are continuous. Mostly ranges are used to denote them. eg: height it can be 1.75, 1.754 or 1.756.
a. Temperatures of the ocean at various
depths.
Continuous
it can have fractional values and many values
b. The voltage supplied each day to my home
in August 2018.
Continuous
Because it can take a lot of values
c. The amount of water I drank yesterday.
Continuous
Again because it can be litres , half litres etc.
d. The number of books I read this summer.
Discrete
only specific values like 1,2,6,ect
e. People are asked to state how many times
in the last month they visited their family
doctor.
Discrete
only specific values like 1,2,6,ect
f. The time it takes a computer to finish a
task.
Continuous
because can b fraction of seconds minutes, etc
