An industrial wastewater treatment process currently uses a single completely mixed flow reactor (CMFR) to achieve 80% removal of a chemical (i.e., 1 - Cout/Cin = 0.8) that decays following first-order kinetics.
(a) What would be the percentage removal in a plug flow reactor (PFR) of the same volume and flow rate?
(b) If the CMFR reactor is reconfigured so that the total volume, flow rate, and influent concentration of the chemical remain the same, but the volume is separated so that it now behaves as two equally-sized CMFRs in series. What is the new value for the percentage removal?
Assume the systems reach steady state for both (a) and (b).

A wastewater treatment plant that treats wastewater to secondary treatment standards uses a primary sedimentation process followed by an activated sludge process composed of aeration tanks and a secondary clarifiers. This problem focuses on the activated sludge process. The activated sludge process receives a flow of 15 million gallons per day (MGD). The primary sedimentation process effluent has a BOD5 concentration of 180 mgBOD5/L (this concentration is often referred as S). Before flowing into the activated sludge process, the primary...

A completely mixed activated sludge process is to be used to treat a flow rate of 2.5 MGD. Design a rectangular activated sludge reactor with a 4:1 ratio of length to width. (design only 1 reactor for all flow). The effluent from the plant must not exceed 15 mg/L of BOD5. Use the following design criteria: a. BOD5 influent = 250.0 mg/L b. MLVSS (X) = 3500 mg/L c. Reactor depth = 11 ft d. Effluent BOD5 must be less...

The Wilson Wastewater Treatment Plant currently provides primary treatment for a flow rate of 2500 m3/day. The effluent from the primary tank has a soluble BOD5= 240 mg/L. You need to design an activated sludge treatment to update the plant. The secondary effluent standards to meet are 25.0 mg/L BOD5 total (suspended and soluble BOD) and 30 mg/L suspended solids. Use the following assumptions: Target soluble BOD5 in the effluent of the secondary treatment is 2.5 mg/L. Growth constants can...
