Solutions

Expert Solution

We need to follow the following steps to find median of a data set.

  • Arrange your numbers in numerical order.
  • Count how many numbers you have.
  • If you have an odd number(for example we have 7 numbers in a dataset), divide by 2 (i.e., 7/2 = 3.5) and round up to get the position of the median number (3.5 is rounded off to 4. Therefore 4th positioned number in the ascending order in that dataset is median)
  • If you have an even number(for example we have 6 numbers in a dataset), divide by 2 (i.e., 6/2 = 3). Go to the number in that position (i.e., 3rd number in ascending order) and average it with the number in the next higher position(i.e., 3rd number in ascending order) to get the median. (i.e., avg of 3rd and 4th number)

When we observe the above steps, one additional step (i.e., finding average of 2 numbers) needs to be performed if we have even number in dataset.

In the give two options, option B is having even number of items (i.e., 6). So we need to perform 1 additional step to calculate median. Therefore, Answer is option B.
