You are a world-famous physical lawyer who defends a client who has been injured in a traffic accident. His client's car was hit from behind by another vehicle while the car was stopped. The judge who is taking the case, argues that if the vehicle of the affected had been in motion, the injuries would not have been so serious.

a) Is the judge correct?

b) Or do you think you can win this case?

c) Investigate and raise your arguments, based on collisions in one dimension.

Solutions

Expert Solution

  1. Yes, The judge is partly correct and partly wrong. As it has already been known that the car was hit by another vehicle from the back. Therefore it is clear that if the car was moving in forward direction the momentum transfer to the car would have been less. If the car was hit during motion in forward direction then the Jerk experienced by the car's driver would also have been lesser. If the car was moving backwards(in reverse gear) the collision would have been more powerful and the jerk experienced would be very large. Here judge only specifies about the motion of the car and not its direction. Moreover if the speed of the hitting vehicle was too high and if it was heavier than car then also very hard collision would have taken place. The lawyer can take advantage of the fact that I explained in Bold letters.
  2. I will help you understand the situation pictorially. It is highly unlikely that the car was travelling backwards. However even if that was the case refer Figure.1. The change in momentum of car is very high therefore the impulse experienced by the driver is very high. Consequently, Massive destruction would have occured. In figure 2. the momentum of car and the vehicle is in same direction therefore the change in momentum is for car is lesser than the Figure 1. case. In this case the impulse experienced is less. If the momentum of the hitting vehicle is very large in comparison to momentum of car then also big accident may take place. In Figure 3. the car is at rest and only momentum present is of the vehicle. This vehicle will transfer momentum to the car.
  3. The lawyer has strong arguments if he argues that even if the car driver was moving in forward direction the vehicle's momentum would do the harm if it was too much.
