◆ SEROTONIN :-

• Serotonin ( 5- hydroxytryptamine , 5​​​-HT ) is a neurotransmitter which help in transmission of nerve impulses.

◆ mechanism of action

• It helps in the communication of nerve cell in brain .
• Vesicles of serotonin release into the synaptic cleft of presynaptic membrane .
• Serotonin molecules binds to postsynaptic membrane ( receptor protein ).
• Serotonin change electric state of cell which help in excitation of membrane , inhibition or transfer of chemical message .
• Serotonin affect on types of behaviour because of serotogenic neurones in different part of brain . refer diagram

◆ effect of serotonin :-

• serotonin neurotransmitter activates serotonin receptors which involves various activity directly or indirectly :-
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep
  • Memory
  • Mood
  • Thermoregulation
  • Cognition
  • Aggression
• Serotonin also found in gastrointestinal tract ( mostly) , helps to regul ate bowl movement , appetite .

◆ stability of serotonin :-

• digestive impairment of defects , impaired metabolism and genetic factors which minimise the ability to build serotonin by disturbing absorption and breakdown of food.
• Low level of serotonin and neurotransmitter is caused by harmonal change and lack of sunlight .
• Stress over long time period can deplete serotonin level.
• Poor diet cause low serotonin because it is made from protein.
• Metal toxicity , pesticides and drugs damage the serotonin froming cells permanently .
