What is computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM)? Explain the significance of CAM.

Solutions

Expert Solution

It is a system in which computer technology is used to assist the manufacturing process. Through the use of CAM an industry can become highly automatic. CAM usually seeks to control production process through varying degree of automation.

As each of the manufacturing processes in a CAM system are controlled by computer as a result high degree of precision is achieved. Some CAM system keep track of materials and automate the ordering process as well as automate the tool replacement process.

CAM is linked to Computer Aided Design ( CAD) and feed computer generated design directly into the manufacturing system.

CAM can be used to facilitate mass customization, i.e. creating small batches of product that are custom designed to suit particular client.

Components of CAM : It involves CAD, Networking & NC programming.
