Describe how information is passed from the pre-synaptic to post-synaptic neuron in order to allow information flow throughout the nervous system.
The process by which this information is communicated from the pre synaptic to post synaptic neuron is known as synaptic transmission. The neuron before the synapse is known as the presynaptic neuron which communicates with the neuron after the synapse which is known as the post synaptic neuron via chemical signals.Neurotransmitters are released by the presynaptic neuron that diffuse across the synaptic cleft i.e gap between neurons and bind to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron. This stimulates the initiation of an electrical impulse in the postsynaptic neuron that passes on the information.Overall, it can be divided into four steps.
