Explain how does stereotyping contribute to institutionalized discrimination and what would need to happen for this to be eliminated.
Stereotyping is an overgeneralized description of a person or a group. It is basically based on race, ethnicity, age, gender or sex. Discrimination refers to the prejudiced action against a group of people. Stereotyping places every single person in the same category and builds views according to them. One of the dangers of stereotyping is that we tend to collect misleading and ambiguous information about the people. Certain isolated behaviors form the basis of unfair judgments about the people. Stereotypes block the way we think and forces to accept the norms. It creates some filters through which we start to judge people. Even when we face the reality, still we don’t come out of the web of discrimination and stereotyping. It becomes a mirror through which we see only the things which we want to see. It also hampers our thought process and stops us in putting extra effort in a work. Assumptions are made out of stereotyping which hinders the effort of the others.
