  • Ethical reasoning pertains to the rights and wrongs of human conduct. Each person has standards that are defined by their personal values which come into play when the person faces certain dilemmas or decisions.
  • Ethical reasoning enhances the welfare of people as well as harms the well being of the people.
  • Types of ethical reasoning include utilitarian, egoism, deontology, relativism and justice
  • Utilitarian-It can be used for many different purposes. It can be used both for moral reasoning and for any type of rational decision-making. It includes taking the right action which does good for a majority of people. Example-while going for vacations or even going out for dinner we ask our family members for suggestions,3 people say London and one says Italy, the decision is taken based upon majority.
  • Egoism-This is more individualistic in which the right decision is taken that benefits the person and not majority of people. If its right for the individual it the best action. Example, changing my job because I am bored of it,but the new job pays less than the previous one but since I am more happy and satisfied this decision is better.
  • Deontology is the moral systems that is characterized by a focus upon strict adherence to independent moral rules or duties. When we follow our duty, we are behaving morally. When we fail to follow our duty, we are behaving immorally. Example, following the basic traffic rules or not throwing garbage on the roads, following policies of the company are basic moral responsiblities we all need to follow as citizens and humans.
  • Relativism-This involves taking right course of action that is adhering to the social norms of the society that you live in. Whether the action is right or wrong depends upon the moral norms of the society. Example, driving on the right side in London is illegal whereas in U.S its not.
  • Justice-It includes the right course of action that treats everyone fairly unless there is a sufficient reason to treat anyone or anything unequally. Example, as parents treating your children equally is justice in terms of education being provided, teaching them the right things, treating sons and daughters equally etc. Even the law system of every country needs to treat every criminal equally and justice needs to be provided to the victims.

Using these ethical reasonings in our daily lives is important. As a citizen of the country I do follow relativism reasoning in my life following traffic rules, not breaking the law etc. At my workplace following the company rules and policies also treating my co workers equally. Paying my bills on time as well income tax is another example of following the moral responsibility as a citizen.
