What is the difference between gene therapy and stem cell therapy? What are some of the successes that have been achieved using gene therapies?
whats the Differentiate between embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. What are the advantages of each? The disadvantages?
Stem cells therapies have been controversial. What are some of the reasons for the debates about this science? What do you think? Do we need legislation and regulation? Who should oversee this research? What kinds of laws should we have?
answer -
GENE THERAPY | STEM CELL THERAPY |
1. It involve the transfer of the gene by a vector to the target individual cell 2. it involve the transfer of the gene via the carrier , it can be viral vector and nonviral vector. |
1. it invove the transfer of the stem cell into the patient . 2. stem cell therapy involve the risk like the loss of control on the cell division |
example that have been achieved using gene therapies is -
- The treatment of the haemophilia A and B due to the defect in the clotting factor gene can be corrected by the gene tranfer therapy .
- CFTR gene transfer to treat cystic fibrosis
answer - difference bw embryonic stem cell and adult stem
Embryonic stem cell(ESC) | adult stem cell (ASC) |
1. it is found in the germline 2. ESC based therapy are less advantageous and safe 3. ESC are pluripotent 4 undergo late apoptosis |
1. it is found in the differentiated tissue 2. ASC based therapy more safe and advantageous 3. ASC are multipotent 4. undergo |
advantages of the ESC -
these cells are undifferentiated hence can be used in all part of the body as a stem cell therapy.
disadvantages
due to lack of the knowledge about these embryonic stem cells , using them can create problem.
sometime they start dividing uncontrollably.
advantages of the adult stem cell -
these cell can be transformed into the puripotent stem cell.
these stem cells are not rejected by the self .
Disadvantage
they are difficult to culture to invitro.
making these cells induced pluripotent stem cells from the adult stem cell is difficult
