The author of the course textbook offered his definition of religion. Based on your own spiritual understandings and beliefs, do you agree with this definition? Explain your reasoning. Cite references where possible.
Corduon's definition of religion is: "A religion is a system of beliefs and practices that directs a person toward transcendence and thus provides meaning and coherence to a person’s life."
I agree with the author’s statement about religion that it is a
system of beliefs and practices that guide a person and help him to
live a peaceful life and find meaning to his life. Religious fervor
was at its high until the 20th century but today with the
psychological and technological advancement religion has come to a
standstill and it’s become more of a ritual.
Today the same definition doesn’t hold any water although as a
definition it may be. In my point of view religion should be
separate from the society, in a way that it should be more
individual need based. When religion is mixed with the society
where all the culture and country people live together, it only
brings hatred and violence.
Today, the world is divided into pieces and fractions in the name
of religion. People try to show off the superiority of their
religious practices to others during the festivals; otherwise, it
doesn’t serve as expected. It’s done more harm than good because
people feel proud of killing other people in the name of God and
there are thousands of Gods who create competition among the
humans.
So religion with this definition, will be effective individually
and not as a community.
