You are studying how quickly and well individuals learn music under various conditions. You find that siblings reared together learn music with similar speed and success. You find less of a correlation when they are raised apart. You also find that adopted children raised together show less correlation in music learning than genetic siblings do. You conclude:
Group of answer choices
Learning music is an innate trait that depends only on genetics
There is a genetic basis for learning music but also environmental effects
Environmental effects largely determine our ability to learn music
Our ability to learn music is polygenic
Answer: There is a genetic basis for learning music but also environmental effects
Explanation: with the given conditions, it can be said that there might be involvement of the genes in learning music but the external factors also influences the trait.
Case I ) Siblings learning the music with same speed and accuracy, here we can say that the genetics is playing the role as siblings will be more closely genetically related to each other, they are having similar genes to grasp music.
Case II) if the siblings are raised apart, they show less correlation, in this case not much can not be said about the genetic similarities in learning music, but definitely the environmental influence is playing the part
Case III) adopted children show less correlation than the genetic siblings, if placed in the same environment. From this it can be said that only the environment is not the influencing factor but genetics is also playing the part.
Hence it can be said that the trait of learning music is influenced by the genes as well as the environmental factors.
Note: there are three types of genotype, environmental relations
1) Active relation between the genotype and environment which will result in enhancing the effect of the genes inherited by the individual because of the environment
2) Reactive relation in which because of the genetic tendency of an individual , he/she will put themselves in the same condition resulting in same type of behaviour.
3) Passive relation in which the environment created by the parents will influence the child’s behaviour.
