Suggest something practical — by that I mean something that you can actually practice or is teachable and learnable by your children.

Firstly, let us understand the structure of the brain along with the function of each structure. Brain mostly consists of four main structures namely the cerebrum, the cerebellum, the pons and the medulla. The cerebrum is the major part which is associated with learning, as well as memory. The two cerebral hemispheres a further subdivided into four lobes the frontal lobe which is associated with decision making planning making judgments thinking and emotional expression. The temporal lobe controls our hearing, memory and language, whereas occipital lobe is in charge of visual processing. The parietal lobe is responsible for body orientation and attention, as well as, spatial thinking and processing. Brain based learning is utilising the complicated structures available in the brain, in order to facilitate growth and change within them. On new information perceived through our senses is transmitted to the Brain through neural networks. The brain processes this information and the hippocampus senses the required signal for the information to be stored as long term memory, if it finds a person is attentive and constantly processing the information.
Considering my personal approach to learning, I find that simple repetition helps in memorizing small sized information such as names and numbers, which has been newly received and does not require processing for understanding. Information such as difficult lessons on topics I am not familiar with require me to concentrate on the topic while reading it and mentally explain it to myself, for clear understanding, as well as retention. I feel that concentration on a topic along with repetition and explanation along with the basic concepts, as well as reasoning behind the concept helps me to retain information in such a way, that I am able to retrieve it as and when required.
A particular challenge that I face in this process, is when I am unable to concentrate, the brain seems to be non co-operative and refuses to retain the information that is being transmitted to it in a non uniform and inconsistent manner. This also happens when I am feeling sleepy and therefore, concentration tends to lapse.
The hippocampus senses the required signal for the information to be stored as long term memory, if it finds a person is attentive and constantly processing the information. Unless an individual is concentrating and continuously providing input along with an attempt to reason and process the information, the hippocampus does not sense the requirement for this information to be retained in memory, as it identifies the input as unimportant due to lack of interest and concentration exhibited by us, through the disinterested manner and lack of focus we are transmitting through other parts of the brain. Therefore, it is essential that the brain detect attitude towards the information as being important enough to store in long term memory based on our attitude towards the input.
And understanding of the brains information processing functions can greatly benefit and instructional designer. This is because the instructor can easily consider the brain as a roadmap through which it is navigating and thereby, attaining the required goal of ensuring the learning process is effective for the students. The instructional designer can ensure that all instructions a repetitive, as well as presented in such a manner as to ensure attention, along with making the learning interesting enough to hold the attention of students, as well as encourage interaction through inclusive learning. This ensures attention, repetition and understanding thereby promoting excellent retention.
I have a challenge with remembering names and telephone numbers and have understood that this happens due to my inability to inform the brain that the information needs to be stored in long term memory, bye repeating the information a couple of times and paying attention to it for a while through concentration.
Having an understanding of the way the brain processes information I would try to implement this information into the learning process designed for others to ensure that the learning is based on the same processing platform as is utilised and comprehended by the brain. Brain based learning is utilising the complicated structures available in the brain, in order to facilitate growth and change within them. On new information perceived through our senses is transmitted to the Brain through neural networks. Therefore, I would ensure that every lesson facilitate growth of the neural networks and follows the methodology bye bye the brain is able to understand that the information is to be stored long term, and process the information through use of specific skills required such as thinking, planning, spatial thinking, processing or memorizing.
