Explain the role of island biogeography in evolution

Explain the role of island biogeography in evolution

Solutions

Expert Solution

Evolution is the change in characteristics which are heritable from generation to generation. This change brings the evolution of species at each level in term of species and molecular level. Island biogeography brings this change rapidly.

There are few principles which are linked with colonization and evolution at islands:-

  • If island is close to main land, there will be higher chances of colonization.
  • Larger island will have more species and colonies because those will arrive from mainland. On Small Island the species will be extinct more rapidly because of limited availability of habitat. Species number will be lower in Small Island and away from mainland.
  • Species as colonies in island becomes genetically different from their parents because of natural selection and genetic drift. These mechanisms will bring the biodiversity.

We concluded that following factors from above explanation responsible for biodiversity and evolution.

  1. Island Size
  2. Distance from mainland.

Explain the role of climate fluctuations in the origins and evolution of the first true primates, the earliest anthropoids, the early Miocene "dental apes" (proconsulids), and the surviving ape species of the late Miocene. Hint Focus on the ways that warming and cooling episodes affected habitable land areas, caused habitat changes, and affected availability of different food sources.

a. Not all evolution is adaptive. Chance plays a role in evolution. Genetic drift can mean certain alleles increase in frequency even when they have negative fitness consequences (remember your population modeling simulations). b. Selection varies over space. A trait may be adaptive in some other area but not in the area the organism or population currently resides. c. Selection varies over time. A trait that might have been adaptive in the past may no longer be adaptive. d. Physical...
