What is brain hippocampus? What are the substructures present in hippocampus?
Hippocampus: Situated within the brain’s temporal lobe there is a curved brain structure resembling to seahorse that is called hippocampus (Gk. Seahorse). Hippocampus plays important role in functions like like learning and memory, stress response, spatial navigation etc. It has a development that is strethed and complex with its own pros and cons as a result. Being comparatively a plastic structure it has a role in adaptive responses.
The hippocampal formation includes the hippocampus proper (i.e., the Cornu Ammonis or CA areas) & the dentate gyrus (DG), and subiculum. The hippocampus proper consists of two substructures of grey matter of U shape. This Cornu Ammonis or Ammon's horn region is differentiated into four subfields – area CA4 or the hilus, areas CA3, CA2, and CA1.Hippocampus is linked to entorhinal cortex (via the subiculum) and the amygdala. Hippocampus especially in the dentate gyrus (DG) region show long term neurogenesis making it a highy plastic region.
