Estimate the size of a square parcel of land that is needed for an airport’s 5000-car parking lot.

Estimate the size of a square parcel of land that is needed for an airport’s 5000-car parking lot. Include space for the access roadways.

Solutions

Expert Solution

We assume that the parking space required for each car is 6 ft × 18 ft. W assumes that the cars are parked in rows of 25. Hence number of rows in which cars are parked will be 200 rows.

Hence the dimensions of the car park will be 150 ft× 3600 ft. Hence area occupied by cars is

150 ft × 3600 ft = 540000 ft2

We now assume between two rows there are access roadways of length 150 ft and width 12 ft. Hence the area occupied by roadways is

150 ft × 1200 ft = 180000 ft2

Therefore the total area required is

540000 ft2 + 180000 ft2 = 720000 ft2

Hence we estimate that the area of the parking lot to be between 720000 ft2 – 7200000 ft2.

Hence we estimate that the area of the parking lot to be between 720000 ft2 – 7200000 ft2.
