Generic name: Dextrose monohydrate.

Type of drug: Injection, solution.

Pregnancy category: It can be administered to a pregnant mother only if it is needed.

Therapeutic action:

It is a sterile, nonpyrogenic and hypertonic solution of injection. It gives carbohydrate source to the body when it administered directly into the blood vessel. It helps to prevent glycogen depletion from liver. It maintains water balance in the body.

Indications:

Hypoglycemia

Nil per oral client

Restricted nutrition

Dehydration

Shock

Contra indication:

Intra cranial hemorrhage

Intra spinal hemorrhage

Delirium

Hypersensitivity

Severe dehydration.

Adverse effects:

Hyperglycemia

Hypoglycemia may result from withdrawal of drug

Phlebitis and thrombosis in a administered site.

Hypervolemia.

Dose:

For adult: 0.5-0.8 g/kg/hour or 25-50 g over 5-30 minutes can be administered.

For child: D25W can be administered in the dosage of 25g.

Interaction:

It has no severe interaction with other drugs.

Nursing Consideration:

* Check for prescription

* Calculate the flow rate.

* Follow sterile technique.

* Observe for any adverse effects.

* Observe the site for any pyrogenic reactions like selling, pain, redness.

* Change the IV cannula site once in three days to prevent thrombo phlebitis.
