TYPE OF DRUG : BETA BLOCKERS
PREGNANCY CATEGORY :
Risk for the fetus has not been ruled out, per being rated pregnancy . Metoprolol drug that it may be suspected of causing harmful effects on the human fetus (but no malformations). It appears to be safe in breastfeeding.
THERAPEUTIC ACTION:
Metoprolol belongs to a class of drugs known as beta blockers. It works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in your body, such as epinephrine, on the heart and blood vessels. This effect lowers the heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on the heart.
INDICATIONS:
Beta-blockers are indicated and have approval for the treatment of tachycardia, hypertension, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, coronary artery disease, hyperthyroidism, essential tremor, aortic dissection, portal hypertension, glaucoma, migraine prophylaxis, and other conditions
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Metoprolol is contraindicated in sinus bradycardia, heart block greater than first degree, cardiogenic shock, and overt cardiac failure. It should be avoided in asthmatics.
DOSAGE:
ADULT:Initial dose: 100 mg orally per day in single or divided doses. Maintenance dose: 100 to 450 mg orally per day
PEDIATRIC:
Initial dose: 1 mg/kg orally once a day (not to exceed 50 mg orally once a day)
Maximum dose: 2 mg/kg (or 200 mg) orally once a day
ADVERSE EFFECTS:
dizziness or lightheadedness.
tiredness.
depression.
nausea.
dry mouth.
stomach pain.
vomiting.
gas or bloating.
INTERACTION:
May interact with this drug is: fingolimod. Other medications can affect the removal of metoprolol from your body, which may affect how metoprolol works. Examples include lumefantrine, propafenone, quinidine, SSRI antidepressants (such as fluoxetine, paroxetine)
NURISNF CONSIDERATION:
PATIENT EDUCATION:
Take apical pulse before
administering. If <50 bpm or if arrhythmia occurs, withhold
medication and notify health care professional.
Administer metoprolol with meals or directly after eating.
Extended-release tablets should be swallowed whole; do not break,
crush, or chew.
Swallow Kapspargo Sprinkle whole. If unable to swallow a capsule,
may be opened and contents sprinkled over soft food (applesauce,
pudding, yogurt). Swallow contents of capsule along with a small
amount (tsp) of soft food. Swallow drug/food mixture within 60 min;
do not store for future use.
