You are caring for an elderly resident at a long care center. This resident has prescribed Lantus 30 units at bedtime and 5 units of Humalog with every meal. What is the purpose of this prescribed regimen? How will you know if this regimen is therapeutic for this resident?
LANTUS and HUMALOG both are insulin
Insulin is a protein hormone that is used as medication to treat high blood pressure in both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes .
Though lantus is long acting insulin whose effect stays long hours of day and night and need to be taken for once or max for twice a day and not after meals unlike fast acting . It is used in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes
Humalog is fast acting insulin which is given mainly after 15 mins of meals and it act immediately to reduce blood sugar levels in body and last between two to four hours , thus need to be given after every meals used in treating mainly type 2 diabetes , though also in type 1 diabetes can be used
People who take fast acting insulin ( humalog) also takes long acting insulin ( lantus) to manage blood sugar level between meals and night respectively.
Thus the purpose of prescribed regimen is to manage bloog sugar level and to treat diabetes in patient
Blood sugar levels can be monitored by glucometer , fasting blood sugar test and Hemoglobin A1c level test .if the patient's blood sugar level is not in control even after this regimen then it can be concluded that it is not therapeutic and if blood sugar levels after these tests shows blood sugar level in range and not hyperglycemic then it can be said that regimen is therapeutic.
