MEDICAL ETHICAL ISSUES – MENTAL HEALTH THERAPIES

Any deviation from the normal thoughts, emotions, behaviour and relation to others to others is termed as mental illness. Therapy or psychotherapy means the person who is having problems with mental health interacts with a licensed mental health care professional and gets help from him to find solution for his problem or come back to the normal mental health. There are different types of therapies and therapy will be chosen according to the condition of the client.

Ethical issues

The ethical issues includes the issues that can be faced by a counsellor and the ethical issue that can affect the client.

Ethical Issues than can affect by the therapist or mental health care professional

Maintenance of privacy : It is the prime responsibility of the mental health care professional. The information’s related to the client should be kept confidential but certain things related to a crime or if the client has got suicidal tendencies in that cases they are supposed to break the confidentiality.

Interpersonal boundaries: Sometimes the client may become over dependant on the care giver and it is the responsibility of the care giver to avoid such situations and they should keep their limits.

Professional competency : The licenced person should be competent in case if the care giver is feeling lack of competence they should refer that client to a competent person. Care giver should not deny the clients right to get the proper treatment.

Personal problems and conflicts: Sometimes the care giver may be having an issue at home the client may come with same issue. Eg: Divorce. In that case the care giver should no approach the client with prejudices. The caregiver may jump in to solutions by thinking about his issue.

Ethical issue that can affect the client or patient

Right for the treatment: Every individuals having the right for the treatment. Some of the mental illness are not getting identified some may got financial issue that my prevent them from treatment. Even if a mentally ill person is committing a crime also they should be treated instead of punishing them.

Informed consent : Every individual is having the right to know about his condition and whatever therapies the care giver is giving it should be informed to them and consent should be taken . I f the client is not in a position to give the consent the legal guardian should give consent.

Confidentiality : It is the right of every client. Their diagnosis treatment and therapies they have taken duration of treatment prognosis everything should be confidential their identity also should be confidential.

Safety and security : It is the responsibility of the government to make sure the safety of the mentally ill person. They should make proper laws in order to ensure their safety. Safety includes physical safety, economic safety, Safety of job etc. The client should not be kept in a cell like jail they are also having the right to have freedom.

Ways to overcome ethical issues :

In general in order to overcome ethe ethical issues proper training should be there for the care givers, The federal laws should safe guard the right of these clients education should be given to the general public in order to increase the awareness. This will leads to early identification and better treatment. Health insurance coverage can be given for mental illness also this will help for avoiding financial issues.
