Question: Complete the following sentence: "A competitive inhibitor competes with substrate binding to the _________ site, generally by also binding to this site; its effect on reaction rate becomes neglectable when the concentration of _________ is sufficiently high compared to the concentration of __________."
Answer: c. active, substrate, inhibitor
A competitive inhibitor competes with substrate binding to the active site, generally by also binding to this site; its effect on reaction rate becomes neglectable when the concentration of substrate is sufficiently high compared to the concentration of inhibitor.
A competitive inhibitor competes with substrate for an enzymatic binding site, ie. for the active site of an enzyme. A competitive inhibitor specifically binds to the active site and hence it often resembles the substrate, but differs from it as the reaction usually does not occur once the inhibitor is bound. In the active sites, competitive inhibitor prevent binding of the substrate. An increase in concentration of substrate to a sufficiently high level cause the active sites to occupy by substrates, and this will prevents the inhibitor molecules from binding to the active sites.
