QUESTION- probable phenotype of children of hemophilia A carrier women and healthy men

SOLUTION-

Hemophilia A is a genetic disorder. It is also called factor eight deficiency. It is caused by missing or defective factor eight, a clotting protein. It is usually passed down from parents to children.

X and Y chromosomes are the sex chromosomes. The gene for hemophilia is carried on the X chromosome. Hemophilia is inherited in an X-linked recessive manner. In males there are only one X-chromosomes while in females there are two X-chromosomes. Therefore a female with only one hemophilia gene will be carrier. When Carries hemophilic gene in both the sex chromosomes then will be diseased.

To understand the possible phenotype drawing a pedigree chart is helpful. When a carrier women marries a healthy Male the possible phenotypes will be ‐

  • There is 50% chance that each son will have hemophilia.

There is 50% chance that each daughter will be a carrier of the hemophilia gene.

Of all the phenotypes-

  1. 25% will be diseased
  2. 75% will be normal ( along with a 25% chance of female child to be a carrier).

Therefore the answer is D.
