Determine which country should be held responsible for the direction and scope of the Cold War? Use examples
Both the US and the Soviet Union would share responsibility for the Cold War. Looking back through history you will find examples from both sides which have contributed over the years to the continuation of the Cold War.
Another way to look at this is that we can view it as a historical inevitability, rather than assigning blame to one side or the other. During World War II, there were six empires: Japan, Germany, Britain , France, the US and the Soviet Union. Can involve Italy to a lesser degree.
Japan, Germany , and Italy were destructed, conquered, and occupied by the end of the war. France was trying to recover from Nazi Germany 's five years of occupation and was near to the end of their colonial period, although Great Britain was fractured, albeit on the "winning" side. That left the Soviet Union and the US to compete on the world stage and those two nations also had opposing and competing ideologies, coincidentally or not.
