Why is the 2nd Ionization Energy greater than the 1st when it comes to removing successive valence electrons when you haven't changed the shielding/number of core electrons. For example, why does it take more energy to remove a 2nd valence electron from say Flourine, even though the number of core electrons (2) hasn't changed at all? Shouldn't that 2nd valence electron still be feeling the same effective nuclear charge from the nucleus?

Select the false statement below. A) Carbon has a greater first ionization energy than lithium, and the reason for this is because C has a greater effective nuclear charge (Zeff) than Li. B) The first ionization energy of an atom is larger than the second ionization energy of the same atom. C) Magnesium has a greater first ionization energy than calcium, and the reason for this is because magnesium has a lesser amount of shielding of outer electrons by inner...

Ionization energy is an inconsistent trend. For instance, the ionization energy of oxygen is lower than that of nitrogen and the ionization energy gallium is less than that for zinc. Suggest reasons this occurs and indicate other regions on the periodic table that this may occur.

#4: Why are the following true? A. The first ionization energy of Se is less than the 1st IE of As B. The very negative electron affinity makes fluorine extremely reactive. C. More energy is released upon adding an electron to Br than upon adding one to Se D. Xenon has a high IE but is unreactive. Iodine also has a high IE but is quite reactive, unlike Xe. Thanks!

Question is based off of Game Theory Mixed strategy and Pure strategy Nash EquilibriumEach of two players chooses a positive integer. If player i's integer is greater than player j's integer and less than three times this integer, then player j pays $1 to player i. If player i's integer is at least three times greater than player j's integer, then player i pays $1 to player j. If the integers are equal, no payment is made. Each player's preferences...
