The decision to use a particular drug formulation is based on many factors, including onset of action, physician/patient preferences, and the available routes of administration. Describe one to two instances where an injectable route of administration might be preferred over an oral route. Identify the advantages to using an injectable route in those scenarios.
Answer.
The example where the injectable route is preferred over the oral route of medication administration are
- emergency situation like severe hypoglycemia. The oral medication and parentral solution like dextrose are both present to treat hypoglycemia. But if we give dextrose in intravenous, the patient can immediately treat the hypoglycemia.
- another example severe pain. For the treatment, it also has medication for both oral administration and the IV administration. To comfort the patient, it is needed to go for iv drug administration to relief the pain very fast and if the oral pain relief medication is given then it will long time to relief from the severe pain.
The advantages of using injectable route against oral route are
- more fast reaction or action of the medication in the body
- help in subside the symptoms very fastly.
- can be given to unconscious patient but oral medication cannot given.
