QUESTION 10
In the current constantly changing healthcare environment, professionals may begin to see patients as numbers and forget why they became part of health care. Using the information from Chapter 10, discuss two reasons why spirituality is important to today’s healthcare professionals.
Studies show spirituality helps patients cope with stress, make crucial medical decisions, and improves their quality of life.
Patients who are spiritual may utilize their beliefs in coping with illness, pain, and life stresses. Some studies indicate that those who are spiritual tend to have a more positive outlook and a better quality of life.
Healthy spirituality gives a sense of peace, wholeness and balance among the physical, emotional, social and spiritual aspects of our lives. However, for most people the path to such spirituality passes through struggles and suffering, and often includes experiences that are frightening and painful.
Some research shows a connection between your beliefs and your sense of well being. Positive beliefs, comfort, and strength gained from religion, meditation, and prayer can contribute to well being. It may even promote healing. Improving your spiritual health may not cure an illness, but it may help you feel better.
It is hypothesized that many of the positive side effects of spirituality, which are outlined below, may also translate to healthier lifestyle choices.
