• What does it mean when we say that there is a relationship between two variables?

• What kinds of relationships can there be between two variables?

• Give an example of two variables that are related. For example, my daughter has an hourly salary. Her paycheck amount is related to how many hours she worked.

• Give an example of two variables that are NOT related.

• Why might the regression equation you have found NOT be a good prediction of the weight of someone who is 100 inches tall? How does this lesson apply to the workplace?

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • When we that there is a relationship between two variables then its mean that when one is changing (increasing or decreasing), then other variable is also changing by the change of first variable.
  • It might be positive or negative. In positive relationships, if one variable is increasing, then other is also increasing and vise versa.
  • Example: Just suppose a company want to send some of its worker for training and want to know the productivity after attending the training program. So, if a worker is trained, then his/her productivity would be better than the untrained worker.
  • Example of not related variable: In above example if we add one more variable, length of the person. If we want to check that after taking the training, does a person become taller? So I find that there is no relationship at all in these two variables.
  • Since 100 inches human being is almost impossible, it's more than 2 meter. So it's beyond the limit and the regression model built by us would not be a good predictor. This means that we can predict only the things that are in limit. We also cannot predict in a better way for 250 pounds weight of a person.
